So, I'm wondering what everyone is using for a bass. brand string amount and scale length. I use an Ibanez Gio 5-string with a 34" scale length.

Squier Classic Vibe 60s Jazz Bass; GHS Flea signature strings; 34" scale; Alnico V single coil pickups (stock). I love this bass. I've had it for over 3 years now; the longest I've had any one bass.

First choice: 1977 Ibanez Silver Series long scale (34") jazz bass moded with EMG HZ pickups, D'Addario nylon tapewound (black) strings.

Second choice: 2011 Fender American Special Precision bass (long scale), with Rotosound Steve Harris monel flatwound strings.

If I need to play something lower than the E on a 4 string in standard tuning, I use an Ibanez SRA 555 with D'Addario Half Rounds.

And my ten-year-old uses an Ibanez Mikro (short scale) 4 string bass with D'Addario nylon tapewounds. (And this explains my tabbing some One Direction and Miley Cyrus - songs that interest the kid!)
Gotta get the kid on the right track early.
