I HATE MY FENDER JAZZ

I bought a used Mexican fender jazz about 6 months ago. My first and only one. Looks good. It was a private sale. It sounded a little dull to me at the time and the guy said he hadn't played it in awhile. He was in a punk band and wanted a different sound so he bought a different bass. It played really good so I was thinking that all it needed was new strings. I checked with my local music store where he bought it and it is about 10 years old. I changed the strings and it still sucks. It is bland and dull. And no punch to it at all. The pickups suck. I hate it. Are all jazz basses like that. I cant compare its the only one I have. I have 3 other fenders. A Precision, a Mexican Mustang and Squire Jaguar. The Squire Jaguar the cheapest out of the 3 kicks the crap out of that bass. Tells you something. And my Mustang and Precision forget about it. It doesn't even compare to those two guitars. I was wondering if he might have taken the original pickups out of it. I was wondering also if I should swap out the pickups. I like the bass. Neck is great. Frets are great. Body is great. Sound blows goats. If that's how all fender jazz basses sound its not for me. And lastly maybe you guys can suggest some better pickups I can put in it. If that's what it needs to give it some punch. There is a lot out there and not really sure where to begin to fix this bass. I don't want to sell it if I can get it to roar. As is forget it. Its just sitting there. I wont play it.

I was exactly in the same situation , had a 2007 mex great neck a real player but the single coils sucked.Put in some Dimarzio DP123 pickups that increased the output and got rid of the annoying single coil hum issue and with the neck pick up only sounded pretty good like a pbass for punk .
Persevered with it but in the end sold it and bought a G&L L2000 tribute which is much more versatile and sounds great ,but the neck profile may not be to your liking its pretty chunky - check out some of Jays videos hes got one
Now the G&L is my backup and my number 1 is a standard fender mex precision with Seymour Duncan quarter pounders , that's a keeper.
if it was me I wouldn't waste any money on modding it , maybe a P/J instead would be a better fit

If I remember rightly I described it as mellow on a different post, compared to a precision. Like mog said, dont waste money modding it, ditch it and get something else, the world is your oyster.

I had a Mex Jazz but it don't matter where it came from, the single coils are wimpy. By 1966 Leo had come up with three basses, the Precision, Jazz and Mustang, he wasn't allowed to come up with anything else for ten years as part of the deal with the sale of Fender to CBS, but the first thing he came up with when the ten years was up was the MusicMan StingRay Bass, he finally hit the nail on the head. He fell out with Tom Walker of MusicMan and started making guitars with George Fullerton again, (George and Leo, G and L) polished guitars based on time spent working on the MusicMan range

Maybe your right. To bad actually. It feels really good to play just sounds like crap. I was hoping I could just swap out the pickups with a suggestion from you guys on what kind I should buy and then perhaps the bass gods would like it and share there thunder. Oh well live and learn. I think MotorMog is right a P/J configuration jazz would be better. I am not going down that road. I like the guitars I have. Just wish I could jazz that one up a bit. Pun intended. And keep it. On another note. Congrats Mr Zee on your 300 tabs. Very cool. I am working on a few of yours as we speak and many more from you and everyone else that I will never get to until my next life. But I screw around with a riff or two. ALSO HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF YOU…

I already have a copy Jazz bass by Samick and though the quality isn't as good it probably sounds just as feeble but at £75 the sting ain't as bad.

I came across this guy on youtube giving away a free American Hot Rod P-Bass when he hits 10000 subs. Maybe you have seen his site I don't know. I couldn't find a thread. I don't know about you but I would take a free bass. Maybe one of us may get lucky. Better chance winning that than the lottery. Good luck to any who subscribe to his channel. Its THEBASSFACTORY.

Why don't you give this a go. Create your own site with the jazz bass as the prize.
It sounds like the bass lacks stiffness. Check all screws joining body and neck, as well as those holding the bridge in place. Those should be really tight.
