Ok, to clear this up before I begin, if I say a high number, I mean
that number, for instance, if I put 18, I mean 18, not 1—8. Ok?
Simple enough...
Alright, The intro is chords, and it starts in at about 25 seconds
into the song (you start in with Ben )
I would suggest playing this with your Pinkie and Index fingers,
but that's just me.
Intro:
G——17——17——17——17——17——17——17——17——16——16——16——16——12——12——12——12——
D——15——15——15——15——15——15——15——15——13——13——13——13——10——10——10——10——
A——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
E——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
G——14——14——14——14——14——14——14——14——12——12——12——12——12——12——12——12——————————
D——12——12——12——12——12——12——12——12——10——10——10——10——10——10——10——10——————————
A——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
E—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————— X4
Now after that fourth time it goes straight into this rift with
barely any pause at all so be ready, here it is:
Pre—chorus:
G—————————————————————————————————————————
D——33333333/77777777——————————————————————
A————————————————————33333333—55555555————
E————————————————————————————————————————— X2
Chorus:
G——————————————————————————————————————————————
D——————————————————————————————33333333————————
A——33333333—2222——————55555555—————————————————
E————————————————3333—————————————————————————— X4
Now this next part is played all the way through until the end.
It may seem tricky at first to some of you guys but it's actually
pretty simple once you get comfortable playing it. ok? Here you go:
Outro:
G————————————————————10/3—————————————————————————————
D——33333333/77777—10——————————————————————————————————
A—————————————————————————33333333—55555555———————————
E————————————————————————————————————————————————————— X13 (I'm 99.9% sure...)
Death Cab for Cutie is an American indie rock band, formed in Bellingham, Washington in 1997. The band consists of Ben Gibbard (vocals, guitar), Chris Walla (guitar, production), Nick Harmer (bass) and Jason McGerr (drums). Gibbard took the band name from the title of the song written by Neil Innes and Vivian Stanshall and performed by their group, the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, in The Beatles' 1967 film, Magical Mystery Tour.
Bass tablature (tabs) is an easy way to learn songs without needing to read traditional sheet music. Here’s a quick guide to understanding the symbols and techniques commonly found in tabs:
Each line in a tab represents a string on your bass:
Numbers on the lines indicate which fret to press. For example:
G|-------------------|
D|-------------------|
A|---3---------------|
E|-------------------|
This means you play the 3rd fret on the A string.
Play the first note by picking it, then press down on a higher fret with another finger without picking again.
G|-------------------|
D|-------5h7---------|
Pluck a note and then "pull off" your finger to let a lower fret ring.
G|-------------------|
D|-------7p5---------|
Move your finger up (/) or down (\) the fretboard while maintaining pressure.
G|-------------------|
D|-------5/7---------|
G|-------7b9---------|
G|-------7~----------|
Tabs don’t always indicate timing, so listen to the song while reading the tab. Wider spaces between numbers mean longer pauses, while closer numbers indicate quicker notes.
Tabs are a great tool to learn songs, but mastering the techniques takes practice. Listen carefully to the original track and play along to lock in the rhythm. Don’t rush — smooth, accurate playing is more important than speed. Happy jamming! 🎸
