I bought a Chowny bass 2 weeks ago and just now I realised that when I turn up the tone knob with the pickup volume off I get a really awful static hum that fades away a bit when I touch the metal piece where you plug the cable. Does anyone else have this problem?
Definitely sounds like a grounding issue, but the fact it is there with the pickup volume off is odd. Checking the connections as MotorMog suggests is definitely the first step, but the issue could almost be in the amp, or even the power source.
