Ok so the huge debate has been going on since the 80's so i would like to know what do you perfer and why and tell me your favorite bass and if neither tell me your favorite type of pickup (humbucker, single coil, etc.)
I play thru a Fender jazz thats all i have ever played thru. so enlightin me tell me about the p bass. pros cons???
Really the only difference between the two is that the P bass has a lower, darker tone than the J bass i play a J bass myself and i love it, also i think the neck on a J bass is thinner that that of a P bas

i have played mostly p basses which is good since im a punk bassist and i'm thinking of getting a mark hoppus sig bass cuz it has p bass pickups but the j body and neck and p bass headstock which the semour duncan sb-3 pickups on it are reversed for more snap to the highs and more grungyness to the lows
i have a washborn lion i love it it was my first bass

I play a Mustang, which is like a little (i.e. short scale) p bass.

Get a bass with both pickup options and try each one out for yourself. I play a Fender Squier Vintage Modified Jag, and it has both the P and the J, and i can't say how much fun i have toggling between the two tones!
@BassLady, I used to play a mustang…great transition bass for someone switching from Guitar! I loved that thing. I too would like to find a great playing inexpensive bass.
Been playing a borrowed Yamaha BB300. The intonation is a little off and sometimes the tuners slip and go flat. I played another guys Ibanez and it was much lighter and had a narrower neck…I liked that…much easier to play. I don't know bass instruments that well, I know for guitars that the top of the line Fenders are incredible, but in the $500-$700 range that Ibanez and Schecter are much better. Is that true of bass as well?

My Mustang is MIJ and it seems great, though I've only had it a month or two. I used to have a Fender MIM guitar and it was awesome, as are many MIM guitars that are in the $600-$700 range. Not sure about the basses, but I would think that they would be the same quality.

I also love my Hofner Icon which cost a measly $375.
