1) In addition to timing drills, know all your scales, major and minor pentatonics, and arpeggios up and down the fretboard.
2) Once you know these essential basics, learn the melody of the songs you want to play bass on. This will help in creating unique, but not overpowering, bass lines.
3) When playing with a live drummer, make sure you watch him/her and play in sync.
