I can't stand him. His lines are so easy. While it takes me hours to perfect a Metallica song from the 80s or early 90s, his lines are child's play. I learn his after the 2nd or 3rd run through. If only Cliff didn't die.

Say huh? He finger-plays Dyer's Eve and Battery. That's not easy, by any stretch. You should check out some of his stuff from Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves. That dude can tear up a bass like nobody's business.

He was in Suicidal Tendencies? I'm going to see them and Slayer and Exodus

Bass playing isn't all about playing hundreds of notes as fast as you can, it's about keeping a driving rhythm going. A good example is Tina Weymouths line on Psycho Killer by the Talking heads, I first saw them play it live in a TV studio and it blew me away. She locks into the kick drum and provides an unstoppable driving groove, the guitars are free to do whatever they want, it's a perfect example of the perfect bassline. Check it out on YouTube.

Interesting thread. Don't know much about Metallica but I like the look of Robert, he fits in with the band & sounds good to me untrained ears. Wouldn't say he was a terrible bassist even if he is no Cliff.

I think Robert is excellent though like softcell62 i'm not a Metallica fan or have too much knowledge about him/them. He may not be as good as Cliff but he does a fine job.
Cliff was the master but I think Robert & Jason before him have done a great job keeping the Metallica name & music alive. Like the last 2 posts i'm not a fan but I have a lot of respect for the band.

Trust me, they shouldn't be kept alive. James Hetfield has horrible vocals and never been a fan of Kirk

I could say the same about Marilyn Manson, of whom I have never, ever been a fan, but I don't take it upon myself to trash him every chance I get.

As for Metallica, I've been with them since Kill ‘em All, and the interesting but flawed experiment St. Anger aside, I’m of the belief that Het and Co. can do no wrong. I even liked their so-called “sell out” era with the Load and Reload albums. Yeah, Hetfield's voice has slipped but the dude has spent the last 30 + years growling his throat raw, so I can overlook it. As for Kirk, that dude can shred, plain and simple. He'd put 99% of most modern rock and metal guitarists to shame without half-trying.

So, agree to disagree. Generation gap and all that.
