Hi, so I'm writing Turning Japanese for my boyfriend, not to play, he's given me it as a challenge. I'm doing the vocals as clarinet (because that's what I play. But I don't understand the guitars. I'm trying to chords for electric but I don't understand any of the numbers and the bass as well. If you could let me know how it worked, I would appreciate that a lot. Thank you!

This is tablature. Each lines represents a string on the bass (in this case, a 4-string bass), with the top line representing the bottom string of the bass, and the bottom line representing the top string on the bass. If it makes it easier, imagine you're looking down at a bass guitar laid across your lap.

Each line represents a string, and each number represents a fret on that string. So if you see a 4 on the top line, it means hold your bottom bass string behind the 4th fret.

Tablature is basically an easy way of learning a song for people who can't read proper sheet music (like me). For a guitar tab, there would be more lines, obviously (as most guitars have six strings). When you see “stacked” numbers on a guitar tab – meaning one number directly above another, on different lines – it represents a chord.

So if you see something like this on a guitar tab:

…it's a chord, meaning you play all those notes in one strum. Incidentally, the letters to the left of each line depict tuning. On a bass, standard tuning, for example, is EADG (remember that in tablature, the lines represent the guitar from bottom to top, not top to bottom).
